2026-27 BOARD & COMMITTEE
Meet the volunteers who guide the SCSH Desert Gardeners Club, organize our programs and events, and help create opportunities for members to learn, connect, and share their love of desert gardening.
Interested in getting more involved?
Our club depends on members who share their time, ideas, and talents. Whether you would like to help with an event, serve on a committee, or learn more about future leadership opportunities, we would love to hear from you.

Kathy Schreiber
PRESIDENT
My husband and I have lived in SCSH since 2019, and I joined the Desert Gardeners Club that same year. I have enjoyed serving on the Program Committee, where we plan the season’s speakers and field trips. This is my first season as President, after previously serving as Vice President and Web Manager.
Our desert garden is a DIY work in progress. I enjoy trying new ideas in the landscape and experimenting with seeds and plant propagation. I also follow some wonderful advice shared by a fellow club member: “If you don’t love it, change it.”
When I’m not gardening, you can find me on the pickleball courts or planning a trip to visit our children and grandchildren in San Francisco, Grand Rapids, or Upstate New York.

Laurie Betassa
SECRETARY
I am a snowbird from the Seattle area and have lived in SCSH since 2021. We joined the Desert Gardeners the same year. This is my first year as the secretary of the club.
During the summer I grow a large vegetable garden and I also grow numerous flowers including marigolds, dahlias, roses and petunias. When I’m not in the garden, you’ll usually find me outside walking somewhere just enjoying nature or I’m in the kitchen experimenting with a new recipe.

Debra Weisgerber
VICE PRESIDENT
I am a seasonal resident and have called SCSH home since 2010. Although I enjoy gardening at our home in Alberta, Canada, gardening in the desert was an entirely new experience for me.
In 2014, I was delighted to learn that Linda Delaney, Kathy Pettit, and several others were forming the SCSH Desert Gardeners Club, and I became one of its original members. Since then, I have served on the Program Committee, participated in the Spring Garden Tour, served as Treasurer for five years, and managed registration for club events. This will be my first season as Vice President.
Even after many years with the club, I am still learning new things and continue to enjoy being part of this wonderful group. My other interests include golf and travel.

Karen Maynes
MEMBERSHIP CHAIR
Hello fellow Gardeners. I am the Membership Chair of our Club and the face you will see at the check in table at our monthly meetings. I am a seasonal resident at Shadow Hills and am from
Maple Ridge, BC (near Vancouver). I moved to Shadow Hills in 2014 and joined the Desert Gardeners in 2020, becoming the Membership Chair in 2024. I have been a long-time gardener
in British Columbia but found growing things in the desert to be a whole new experience. Our club has given me the tools, tips and support group I needed to understand gardening in this new environment.
My first love is growing flowers in outdoor pots, and you will see these
throughout my yard. When I am not gardening you will find me on the golf course, playing cards or majong and just generally enjoying the wonderful community we live in.

Gayle Harris
TREASURER
When I moved to SCSH in 2007, as the original owner of our current home, I always dreamed of a beautiful garden. We had 90 days to get it built from bare dirt. Over the years, the garden has changed as a result of the intense summer heat.
Joining the garden club, first as a member of the program committee and now treasurer has been so helpful in making the required changes. Between our monthly meetings, field trips and garden tour, I have gained enormous knowledge helping to transform the original design. Gardening in the desert is very challenging and an ongoing labour of love. There is always a surprise on arrival from our Canadian home in Invermere BC each fall. However, the very best part of being involved in the garden club is the friendships formed over all these years.
